South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Adult Education graduate Faith Dunford and instructor Angie Kauffman recently took part in the Technical College System of Georgia’s annual Dinah Culbreath Wayne EAGLE (Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education) conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Dinah Culbreath Wayne EAGLE award recognizes the educational achievement and outstanding leadership skills demonstrated by students who are in the process of studying for or have earned their High School Equivalency.
Faith Dunford represented SGTC as the college’s EAGLE student for 2022. After her school closed when she was in fifth grade, Dunford enrolled in a virtual home-schooling program. She struggled with the lack of personal contact in the virtual environment and battled depression as her grades slipped. After receiving treatment for her depression, she enrolled in the adult education program at South Georgia Technical College to earn her High School Equivalency. Dunford also took advantage of the Dual Enrollment program to earn college credits while she worked toward her High School Equivalency. Dunford plans to continue her education as she works toward a career in healthcare.
Angie Kauffman attended the conference as SGTC’s nominee for the Teacher of the Year award for adult education in the Technical College System of Georgia. Kauffman is a 25-year teaching veteran, and she feels her work in adult education at South Georgia Technical College is the most rewarding job she has held. A High School Equivalency affords adult learners a broader range of opportunities in education and the workforce, and Kauffman is honored to have the opportunity through her work to help people achieve their goals. She also values the relationships she forms with the students who enroll in adult education.
The Adult Education Program at South Georgia Technical College welcomes adults who are interested in gaining employment or attending college/vocational training and need to improve their math, reading and English abilities, or are preparing for the High School Equivalency test.
