The Campus Safety Department mission is to provide a safe and secure environment for all persons on the campus of South Georgia Technical College.

The Campus Safety Department’s goal is to reduce the victimization of the campus community through education. Campus Safety provides the campus community with safety and crime prevention information. Presentations and materials are available on topics including personal safety, property engraving, fire safety, alcohol/drug issues, and date rape prevention.

  • A few safety tips everyone should know are:
    • • Always lock the door to your room or office when you are away. It only takes a few seconds for a theft to occur.
      • Do not leave your key in a secure location around your door.
      • Always use the "buddy system" when traveling at night and stay on traveled and well-lighted routes.
      • If you see something suspicious, contact the Campus Safety officer immediately.
  • In partnership with the students, the Americus campus provides:
    • • Officers on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

      • One Chief on staff with full arrest powers
      • Safety programs offered during each quarter

  • Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
    • A copy of the annual security and fire safety report containing campus policies and procedures as well as campus crime and fire safety statistics is located in the Office of Campus Safety. The “Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act” information is located in the Campus Safety Office.   • Parking Areas
    • Parking decals forms are available at the Campus Safety Office in Hicks Hall. Students must know the make, model, and tag number of the vehicle in order to get a decal. Parking decals are required for all vehicles parked on campus. There is a designated parking space for the College President and the Instructor of the Year. Handicap Parking only is reserved in every parking lot on campus. A campus map is available in the Office of Admissions.
  • Transportation Report
    • Finding a close and convenient parking space is fairly easy at South Georgia Technical College. Parking is accessible from most entrances.

      RMS, Inc. provides public transportation in Americus and Sumter County at a rate of $3.00 per one-way trip 0-10 miles within the county (1/2 price discount for senior citizens over the age of 60). Trips over 10 miles or that start or end outside of Sumter County are provided at a rate of $3.00 base rate plus 0.50 cents per mile per one-way trip. Availability is first come, first served. The best time to ride is during our off-peak hours of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

      RSM, Inc. does offer handicap accessible vehicles for individuals that require the use of a lift. Be sure to indicate the need for a lift-equipped vehicle at the time you make your trip request. Drivers will assist individuals in safely boarding and exiting the vehicles. Individuals with mobility impairments who need special assistance in navigating to and from the vehicle should have a Personal Care Attendant (PCA) ride with them. When the bus operator is notified, the PCA will be able to ride free of charge.

  • Emergency Action Plan
    • South Georgia Technical College Emergency Action Plan (EAP) was developed to minimize panic and confusion in the event of an emergency on the college campus. The college will work directly with the City and County Law Enforcement and Emergency Management agencies to best manage the situation. During a campus emergency, SGTC will take immediate action to implement the appropriate procedures to manage the emergency. These procedures are meant to safeguard persons and property and to secure facilities. In case of an emergency, faculty and staff will be notified through Blackboard Connect and the Emergency Notification System, instant messaging via all telephone numbers and emails on file with the college.   • Security Service

      South Georgia Technical College works to help you maintain your personal safety and to protect our property by providing security and safety services. In the event of a medical emergency, South Georgia Technical College will refer a student to the nearest medical facility. In the event of a medical emergency, it is understood that the student or parent will assume full responsibility for the cost of emergency care at the hospital including ambulance charges if such service is necessary. First aid kits are available in the security office, in the office of the Vice President of Student Affairs, and in many labs throughout the campus. Staff is instructed to call 911 for a potentially life-threatening emergency and then to report the incident to the Campus Safety.

  • Hazardous Weather Conditions
    • South Georgia Technical College will operate on a normal schedule unless, due to hazardous weather conditions or other situations, our status is announced as College Closed. College Closed means: classes are cancelled, faculty/staff need not report to their offices, all college events scheduled for that day are cancelled, dorms are open to feed/house residential students and staff unless otherwise specified. Details will be posted to the South Georgia Technical College website when available. Instant messaging via Blackboard Connect Emergency Notification System will be used.
