Driver’s Education for Georgia Teenagers

Learning to drive is a major milestone in a teenager's life. It's important for young or inexperienced drivers to learn safe driving techniques. There are four different ways Joshua’s Law can be satisfied for teenagers to meet the requirements for a Class D license. The program offered by South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) meets the option that includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 additional hours of drive time with an instructor. SGTC provides a (DDS approved) Driver’s Education program in cooperation with the Georgia Driver’s Education Commission (GDEC).

To join a class, a student must be between the ages of 15 to 18. Students who are 18 are allowed to take the course if they are currently enrolled in high school or have graduated from high school within the last six months prior to the beginning date of the class. We do not offer adult driving lessons or classes.

Step-by-step instructions on how to register for Driver's Education classes:

Students ages 15-17 with a Georgia learner’s permit are encouraged to apply for the grant scholarship (value of $375.00). Scholarships are not awarded by SGTC and therefore, SGTC will not be able to check the status of scholarship applications. GDEC operates the scholarship program so any scholarship inquiries will need to be directed to GDEC. Program eligibility information can be found by clicking here.

STEP 1:

READ all information below before choosing your preferred class. Please see the class schedule below, along with the deadline dates for applying for scholarships.

  • Students MUST attend ALL scheduled class sessions to total 30 hours. NO absences allowed.
  • Students MUST complete 6 hours of in-car driving. (Prior driving experience is required to help the student receive the maximum benefit from the driving sessions.)
  • Driving sessions are scheduled during the weekdays after school, on weekdays when school is not in session, and all day on weekends.
  • A valid Georgia learner’s permit is required to participate.
  • Space is limited and classes are filled on a first come basis to those submitting all required information.
  • Class dates and times are subject to change.

STEP 2:

Apply for the grant scholarship by going online to https://www.gahighwaysafety.org/georgia-drivers-education-grant-scholarship/. Scholarship codes must be received before the class start date and emailed to: driversed@southgatech.edu. Scholarship applications are due on the last day of every month. Grant scholarship awards and denials will be issued on the 1st day of each following month and will be sent by electronic mail. To review the Georgia Driver’s Education Grant Scholarship Program Eligibility Criteria and a list of approved training providers, please go to https://gahighwaysafety.org/gedec-resources/.

STEP 3:

Please review the course schedule below. Class sizes are limited. Please do not register for a course if you cannot attend all class sessions in their entirety. The 6-hour behind the wheel drive time is scheduled separately from class time. To register, email us at pfarr@southgatech.edu. In your email, please indicate which class you wish to join and include a clear copy of your driving permit. Students registering with a scholarship code must present the code prior to the first day of class. Scholarship codes received after the first day of class are not valid. If a scholarship code isn’t provided, an email will be sent as to where and when payment of $375.00 needs to be made.

South Georgia Technical College reserves the right to cancel, postpone, limit enrollment, split or combine classes, and change instructors and class locations when necessary. For classes cancelled by South Georgia Technical College, registrants are given full refunds.
