John Averill claimed the Best in Show prize for his 1979 Trans Am at the recent South Georgia Technical College Father’s Day Car Show. Over 100 entries including cars, trucks, motorcycles, SUVs and service vehicles were on display as a crowd of over 300 people attended to see the impressive array of vehicles. Admission was free and lunch was provided.
Tony Tyson’s 2013 Harley Davidson earned second place in the Best in Show category, while Tyris High took home the third-place prize with a 2022 Harley Davidson.
In the Service Vehicle category, John Edgemon took first place with a 1966 tank, West Mortuary’s hearse earned second place, and Jason Jones’ hearse came in third.
Barry Cason’s 2016 Mustang GT Premium won first place for Best Paint, followed by William Sandefer’s Mercedes Benz and a Ford Bronco entered by Colby Walls.
Best Motorcycle went to Tony Tyson’s 2013 Harley Davidson, while Tyris High’s 2022 Harley and Richard Harden’s 2006 Harley finished second and third, respectively.
In the Best New Car (1995 – Present) category, Barry Cason took first place with his Mustang. A 2019 Corvette from Kirby and Lucille Ragins finished second, and Eric Creely’s Shelby GT 500 was third.
The first-place prize for Best Old Car (1900-1994) went to John Averill’s 1979 Trans Am, second place was awarded to a 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air from Bubba Lewis and the late Jack Johnson, and Randy Oder’s 1935 Ford Coupe took third place.
The Best Truck winner was Jerry Barker’s 1971 Chevy C10. Buddy Hollomom’s 1955 Ford f-100 finished second, and Stephen Pinnell’s 2024 Ford Bronco was third.
The award for Most Car Club Members went to The Cordele Cruisers.
The SGTC Father’s Day Car Show was headed up by Motorsports Instructor Kevin Beaver and Matthew Burks, John Deere Tech instructor at South Georgia Technical College. SGTC Academic Dean David Finley grilled hotdogs and hamburgers and provided free lunch for the participants and spectators.

Attendees at the car show also had the opportunity to learn more about the over 200 associate degree, diploma, and technical certificate of credit programs offered at South Georgia Technical College. The college is currently accepting applications for Fall Semester which begins August 15. A registration event will be held on Tuesday, July 23, on both the Americus and Crisp County campuses.
