Groundbreaking ceremony held for new Sumter County High School

South Georgia Technical College officials were on hand to celebrate the Sumter County Board of Education’s groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sumter County High School that will be constructed on South Georgia Technical College Parkway across from South Georgia Technical College.

   Several hundred community members, Sumter County School Board of Education Members, Ignite College and Career Academy Board members and supporters, as well as high school faculty, staff, and students were on hand for the event that has been nearly 10 years in the making.

   Sumter County Schools Superintendent Dr. Torrance Choates, Board Member Rick Barnes, Americus-Sumter County High School Principal Kimothy Hadley, Board member Jim Reid as well as Americus Mayor Barry Blount, Sumter County Board of Commissioner Chairman Clay Jones and Brandi Lunnebord, Chair of the Ignite College and Career Academy Board each offered remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony.

   Rev. Wendy Peacock from the Sumter Area Ministerial Association (SAMA) provided the invocation and officials from South Georgia Technical College, Georgia Southwestern State University, and James Buckley & Associates and Parrish Construction Group, Inc. were all recognized.

   At the end of the ceremony, the Sumter County Schools Board members and officials and the Ignite College and Career Academy Board took the opportunity to officially break ground for the new high school.
