Jem Morris recognized for service to SGTC Board of Directors
South Georgia Technical College Board of Directors Chairman Richard McCorkle from Marion County and SGTC President Dr. John Watford recognized James E. (Jem) Morris for his service to the SGTC Board of Directors with an appreciation plaque at the October South Georgia Technical College Board of Directors meeting.
Morris, Area Manager of Georgia Power Company in Americus, has served on the South Georgia Technical College Board of Directors since September 2015. He and his family are relocating with Georgia Power outside of the South Georgia Technical College service area and he is resigning from the college’s Board of Directors effective immediately.
“On behalf of the Board and everyone at South Georgia Technical College, I would like to thank Jem Morris for his dedication and willingness to serve on the SGTC Board of Directors,” said Chairman McCorkle. “It has been an honor serving with you.”
South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford echoed Chairman McCorkle’s comments and presented Morris with an engraved plaque with the college logo that said, “Presented to James E. Morris for outstanding service and leadership to the South Georgia Technical College Board of Directors, October 4, 2017.”
Morris, a certified professional engineer and certified energy manager, is a graduate of Georgia Tech and has a Master’s of Business Administration from Georgia State University in Organizational Development and Effectiveness, Marketing.
“I would like to thank everyone here at South Georgia Technical College and each of the board members for their support during the past two years,” said Morris. “This is one of the most enjoyable boards that I have had the privilege to be a part of and I will certainly miss you and the many friends that I have made here in Americus and Sumter County.”
The local Board of Directors of individual colleges were created by Georgia State Statute to assist the Technical College System of Georgia State Board in carrying out its mission. The primary purpose of the local board and its members is to: 1.) advise on program direction via their personal subject matter expertise and awareness of area business needs for program decisions and priorities; serve as a check and balance for the development and implementation of college goals and objectives as well as operations policies and procedures; and 3.) advocate within the community and in the state legislature on issues of importance in support of the technical college system and Georgia’s workforce development efforts.
The board is made up of community leaders representing the SGTC service delivery area, which includes Sumter, Schley, Crisp, Macon, Marion, Webster and Taylor counties.
The other members of the SGTC Board of Directors include: George Bryce and Janet Siders of Americus, Jimmy Davis from Macon County and Jake Everett of Webster County.
