South Georgia Technical College will host the fourth annual “Light Up Your Future” event Tuesday, December 3rd from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The community is invited to join the fun at this free celebration on the lawn between the Odom Center and Hicks Hall on the Americus Campus. Participants can also attend the SGTC Jets basketball game against Action Sports Academy free of charge. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
Santa and his elves will be on hand to greet families and children will have an opportunity to have their photo made. Each program area will set up displays using Christmas Lights to illuminate the programs and the opportunities it offers. Musical groups from the community will be performing and there will be delicious refreshments including gourmet hot chocolate, fresh popcorn and cotton candy.
“We started this tradition as a creative way to promote the outstanding educational opportunities at South Georgia Technical College,” said SGTC president Dr. John Watford. “And we wanted to give back to the community by hosting a fun, informative event people of all ages could enjoy. The community can meet instructors and learn about the process of getting into college and how easy it is to get started by filling out an application.”
Each of the college’s individual program divisions such as transportation, personal services, business and computers, and industrial and technical programs will host amazing light displays that highlight different career opportunities. The South Georgia Tech Lady Jets and different clubs and organizations on campus will also be participating in the event.
The college will be waiving the $25 application fee to anyone
who applies for the Spring Semester which begins January 9th, 2020. Students
may come in before that date and apply, test, and register as part of a
one-stop application process. South Georgia Tech will also host another
registration and orientation session on Tuesday, January 7th, 2020.
In the Transportation area, the Caterpillar Heavy Equipment
program will display the large Caterpillar equipment in Christmas lights. The
John Deere Agricultural Technology program will do the same thing with its
large tractors and Diesel and Commercial Truck Driving will feature one of the
18-wheel rigs lighted. It is a great time for kids of all ages to come, see,
and touch some heavy equipment.
The automotive programs and the aviation programs will have their fun educational toys showcased in lights and all the other programs will be telling their stories in lights as well.
“This is an outstanding event and we hope that the community will come out and enjoy the lights, take in a basketball game, and learn more about the opportunities available at South Georgia Technical College,” said President Watford.
