The need for electricians is on the rise and if you are interested in a pandemic proof career that is in high demand and pays well, contact South Georgia Technical College today and sign up for the Electrical Systems Technology program offered in Americus and Cordele. Classes are held on-line and in-person and are flexible.
“There are tremendous opportunities for people interested in the electrical field,” said SGTC Instructor Patrick Owen who will now be teaching the Electrical Systems Technology classes at the South Georgia Technical College Americus campus. Mike Enfinger is the instructor on the SGTC Crisp County campus. “There is a demand for electricians today and that demand is only going to increase as older electricians begin to retire. And there is nearly unlimited earning potential. Individuals can start their own businesses or work for electrical contractors or manufacturers.”
Owen, who also teaches the Industrial Systems Technology program for South Georgia Technical College, holds unrestricted electrical contracting license, as well as, unrestricted low-voltage license issued by the Stage of Georgia. He has worked as an electrician and is excited about this new opportunity with South Georgia Technical College.
“The coolest thing is that individuals can come to South Georgia Technical College and in two years or less, be earning great money doing something that is in high demand and will only become more in demand,” said Owen. South Georgia Technical College is currently accepting students for its Spring Registration. Classes start January 13th and there are no test requirements for admission. Individuals can apply online at: /admissions/how-to-apply/. Financial aid is also available to pay for tuition and fees.
According to the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for electricians is expected to grow by a whopping 20 percent through 2022. This significantly exceeds the average growth for all occupations. Why the increase? Older electricians are retiring which leaves the door open to new workers entering the field. And considering that nearly every building has some form of electrical power, there is a tremendous demand for individuals to provide that service.
Emerging technology related to alternative power generation – everything from solar to wind, is also generating demand to install or link these alternative sources of power to the grids. Other skill sets that electricians provide include installing home security systems, communications, lighting, and control systems in homes, businesses, and factories.
“Anyone who is looking for a very fulfilling career and who is interested in earning between $50,000 and $100,000 should considered becoming an electrician,” said Owen. “Individuals can start classes at South Georgia Tech now and after one semester can begin working while they continue their classes. Within two to four years, individuals can become licensed electricians. The time in class counts toward your time working under a licensed electrician. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to use their mind to work with their hands.”
Classes in the Electrical Systems Technology program include: Industrial Safety Procedures, Electrical Prints, Schematics, and Symbols; Commercial Wiring I and II, Electrical Controls; Direct Current Fundaments, Alternating Current Fundaments, Residential Wiring I and II; Diagnostic Troubleshooting, National Electrical Code Industrial Wiring Applications and more.
