The committee to select South Georgia Technical College’s candidate for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) met recently on the campus of SGTC in Americus. The committee interviewed finalists for the honor and chose a winner to be announced Tuesday, January 16th during the GOAL Luncheon at the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center.
The selection committee members are Ervin Anderson, Senior Lecturer Emeritus and Executive Director of the African American Male Institute at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW); Amber Batchelor, President of the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce; Rev. Michael Coley, past chairman of the SGTC Board of Directors; Dr. Gaye Hayes, GSW Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Management; and Richard McCorkle, Executive Director of Chattahoochee-Flint RESA.
A panel of SGTC staff and administrators interviewed students who were nominated by their instructors and chose the following as finalists for the SGTC GOAL honor: Joshua Bartlett of Vienna, Electrical Systems Technology; Damon Brown of Americus, Culinary Arts; Katlin Champion of Americus, Marketing Management; Diquita Mathis of Pinehurst, Criminal Justice; Zackary Mincey of Buena Vista, Welding; and Eddie Williams of Cordele, Barbering.
The objective of the GOAL program is to recognize and reward excellence among students attending the colleges of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). Launched in 1972, GOAL was the first statewide program in the nation to honor outstanding students in technical education.
