SGTC Foundation awards Lamaiyah Zybrekkia Ashley the Crisp County High School Class of 1965 Scholarship
Lamaiyah Zybrekkia Ashley of Cordele, a member of the 2017 graduating class of Crisp County High School, was nominated and selected to receive the Crisp County High School Class of 1965 scholarship at South Georgia Technical College for the 2017 – 2018 year. The scholarship can be utilized for tuition, books, supplies, and educational tools while she continues her education at South Georgia Tech.
Alumni of the Crisp County High School Class of 1965 set up the scholarship at South Georgia Technical College as a meaningful way to give back to their community. The scholarship is awarded annually and is open to members of the current graduating class of Crisp County High School who choose to further their education at South Georgia Technical College.
Ashley has been accepted into the Medical Assisting program at South Georgia Technical College for Summer Semester 2017 and plans to attain her practical nursing diploma. She enrolled at South Georgia Technical College while she was still in high school as part of the Move on When Ready program.
The new graduate of Crisp County High School has been active during her high school career. She was a member of the Crisp County Beta Club and worked at Captain D’s as a cashier during the last three years of her high school career.
“I would like to thank the members of the Crisp County High School Class of ’65 for providing this scholarship,” said Ashley. “My goal is to go to school and pursue a career in nursing. I enjoy caring for others. Growing up, I have always enjoyed helping my grandmother when she couldn’t help herself. I understand that nursing is a hard career but I know that I can do it and I am thankful for this opportunity.”
Lamaiyah Zybrekkia Ashley is the daughter of Angela Walker of Cordele.
The Crisp County High School Class of 65 initiated this scholarship program15 years ago when they returned to Cordele for a class reunion. They were extremely pleased and surprised to find that South Georgia Technical College had established a campus in Crisp County.
Susan Owens Stripling, along with Patti Bridges Dash and Stella Williams Bailey were the guiding forces behind the scholarship efforts. They decided to enlist the support of their classmates to establish a fund to provide assistance to students who wanted to attend South Georgia Technical College after high school graduation. The former CCHS students were successful in securing enough donations from classmates to establish a scholarship endowment fund with the SGTC Foundation.
