SGTC Graduates off to a Successful Start in their Careers

Americus, GA - Two graduates of the Aircraft Structural Technology program at South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) recently stopped by the SGTC campus in Americus to pay a visit to their instructor, Jason Wisham, and update him on their careers so far.

Darryl Rumph, Jr. and Riana Davis, both from Macon County, used their education at SGTC to earn positions with Thrush Aircraft in Albany. Rumph is a wing mechanic. He went to work for Thrush upon graduating from SGTC in 2018. Davis graduated in December of 2020 and builds rear aft spars for aircraft at Thrush.

Both former students spoke about the value of what they learned from Wisham at SGTC and also shared their thoughts on how South Georgia Tech has changed their lives. “South Georgia Tech is a good school to go to,” Rumph said. “It will really benefit you if you’re looking to start a career.”

Davis echoed his sentiment, saying “I feel like South Georgia Tech changed my life because I learned how to do something different – something that a lot of females don’t do. I feel really grateful for coming through this program.”

Davis chose the Aircraft Structural Technology program at the urging of her father who works as a sheet metal mechanic at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins. Rumph has been fascinated by aircraft since he was a child and learned about the program when Wisham visited his school for a career fair. Rumph was intrigued and visited the SGTC campus. He enrolled in the Aircraft Structural Technology program after finishing high school.

Wisham was thrilled to hear from his former students about their career progress. “They put the work into the program, and it’s paid off for them,” he said. “I’m proud of them and what they are accomplishing. To see them sit in the same desk I sat in as a student at SGTC and work for the same company where I worked earlier in my career means a lot to me.”
