SGTC Holds Activities for Halloween and Red Ribbon Week

The South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Student Government Association (SGA) recently held a series of events and activities to mark Halloween and Red Ribbon Week, a national campaign every year from October 23 – 31 to support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth.

In the Halloween door decorating contest, Marketing Management won first place in the program category, while SGTC Registrar Kari Bodrey and Registrar Assistant Shonda Boddie won the office door category. The Cosmetology program finished in second place, and Practical Nursing came in third.

In the student door competition, Kamiya Hollingshed was awarded first place. Elisia White placed second, while Joan Barber and Jana Stoklosa finished in third place.

Judges for the door decorating contest were SGTC Vice President of Operations Karen Werling, SGTC Tutor and Assistant Basketball Coach Jaren Harris, and SGTC High School Initiatives Specialist Brittny Wright-McGrady.

A painted pumpkin contest was held with first place going to the Practical Nursing program. The Criminal Justice program won second place, while the Law Enforcement Academy placed third.

Several students and SGTC faculty and staff members also participated in a costume contest. Student Affairs won the employee group costume category. Criminal Justice Instructor Teresa McCook took first place in the employee individual category followed by Student Affairs Assistant Terrie Smith and Cosmetology Instructor Dorothea Lusane McKenzie in second and third places respectively.

In the student competition, Jessica Felton won first place, Courtney Derington placed second, and Derrick Carson finished third. Joan Barber and Jana Stoklosa won the student group competition.

Sgt. Eric English of the Americus Police Department and Jennifer English, Director of the Middle Flint Regional E911 Center, served as judges for the costume contest.

Other activities for the week included Spirit Night at the SGTC Jets and Lady Jets scrimmage basketball doubleheader and an outdoor “Scary Movie Night”.

In recognition of Red Ribbon Week, the SGA set up an educational display in the lobby of the Odom Center showing the harmful effects of drug and alcohol abuse.
