A South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) student organization received national recognition recently for its continued involvement in the Crisp County community.

The college’s Crisp County Center chapter of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) received the 2018-2019 NTHS Community Service and Outstanding Chapter Award and given the Silver Star of Excellence.

SGTC president Dr. John Watford endorsed the chapter in a letter to the deciding committee.

“The students of the organization have been very involved in campus and community events throughout the 2018-2019 academic year and we are very proud of their accomplishments. The NTHS members exemplified the attributes of the National Technical Honor Society on campus and in the Crisp County community,” he said before listing the chapters’ accomplishments.

Throughout the year, NTHS members and advisors participated in several community events which included: visiting the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall, hosting a Veterans Day program, sponsoring a Holiday Mail for Heroes event, hosting a Black History Month program, hosting a domestic violence program and hosting a mental health program, reading to area children in their classrooms, helping enrich the Family Development Task Force’s Developmental Math Project, assembling bags for the Crisp County Community Council’s Talk with Me Baby campaign, and several other projects.

South Georgia Tech’s NTHS chapter is one of only five organizations in the country to receive the award. Other recipients included South Texas Academy for Medical Professions, St. Clair County TEC, Northland Career Center and Harmony Science Academy – Beaumont.

The Silver Star of Excellence Award is designed for chapters to achieve national recognition for their educational excellence and community involvement. The award encourages chapters to promote NTHS’ values in both their school and community.

The National Technical Honor Society honors the achievements of students within workforce education, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today’s highly competitive workforce.
