SGTC students observe Halloween with Costume, Pumpkin carving contest

South Georgia Technical College students celebrated Halloween recently with festivities that included a costume contest, pumpkin carving contest and horror movie showing. The events, which took place in Hicks Hall on the Americus campus, were sponsored by the Student Government Association. SGTC students from several program areas dressed up in their most creative and scary costumes and stood before the judges for the costume contest. Each program was judged as a whole before each student was judged for individual costumes. The first place winner in the group costume category would be awarded with a pizza party for their program. Judges on the panel included Jasmine Mercer, student affairs assistant; Tami Blount, economic development administrative assistant; and Lisa Jordan, adult education administrative assistant. Costume contest winners in the group category included Dorothea Lusane-McKenzie’s Cosmetology class in first place, Mary Cross’ Marketing Management class in second place and Teresa McCook’s Criminal Justice class in third place. Individually, the winners were Jenna Gill of Ellaville, who won first place for her Mad Hatter costume, Ashley Stanford of Americus, who won second place for her Voodoo Doll costume and Sidney Daniel of Dawson, who dressed up as a gumball machine and won third place. In addition to dressing up, programs were encouraged to pre-carve and submit a pumpkin to be judged in the pumpkin carving contest. The first place winner of the contest would also win a pizza party for up to 25 people in their program. The winners included the Cosmetology program in third place, the Machine Tool program in second place and the Welding and Joining program in first place. All SGTC students were encouraged to attend the event – costume or no costume – to join in the fun, eat candy and support their classmates. After awards were announced, students were invited to grab a free lunch, courtesy of the Culinary Arts department. Later in the evening, dorm students were welcomed back to Hicks Hall for a Halloween themed movie night with a screening of “John Carpenter’s Halloween.” Soft drinks and popcorn were served to the attendants. Cynthia Carter, director of career services at SGTC, thanked students for coming to the events and making the Halloween festivities a success for the second year in a row.
