South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets sophomore Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din has announced that she plans to continue her academic and athletic career at Stetson University in Deland, FL. South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and head coach James Frey said he couldn’t be more thrilled.
“I’m really excited for Yazz and her family,” said Coach Frey. “She has worked really hard to improve her all-around game since she got here. She’s worked hard in the weight room as well as in the gym. When she got here she had a few Division One schools that had begun talking with her and following her. It has been fun to watch some of those same schools now offer her a scholarship. It speaks to her development. Yazz is very humble but it’s impressive that she’s earned more than fifteen scholarship offers from Division One schools.
The 5’11” sophomore forward from Decatur, GA, was the leading scorer for the Lady Jets this past season. She helped lead the Lady Jets to their best season record ever with a 30 – 2 overall performance and a 17 – 0 conference record. Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din and her teammates helped the Lady Jets qualifiy for the programs’ fourth consecutive trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament by winning the GCAA regular season conference title, the NJCAA Region XVII tournament and the District J championship. However just one day away from boarding a plane to go to the NJCAA National Tournament, their trip was cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus.
“I will personally miss Yazz and her family,” said Frey. “They have become a tremendous part of our Lady Jet family. The support her mom and dad have given us and the trust they had in us to take care of her is something special. They were all in from day one and that support has made it easy to coach her. Yazz has told me a lot she wishes she could be at SGTC for all four years. That tells you how much these young ladies appreciate the incredible support they get from our administration.”
During her two years at South Georgia Technical College she and the Lady Jets amassed a 35 – 0 record in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) conference. She averaged 15.1 points per game along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals each outing. She is also a 75% free throw shooter and hit 50% of her three point attempts while averaging over 20 minutes of playing time every game.
Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din earned Honorable Mention All-American status from World Exposure this season. Only 35 of the top NJCAA women’s basketball players in the nation earned All-American first, second, or honorable mention distinction this season. She was also a member of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic team for the 2019 – 2020 season.
