SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary Announces WLTI National Statesman Award

WASHINGTON - Stephanie C. Tyson, a South Georgia Technical College student from Americus, met the National Statesman Requirements to earn the SkillsUSA National Statesman Award recently at a conference in Alexandria, Va. Tyson is an SGTC Early Childhood Care & Education student at SGTC and also holds the title of SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary State Vice President. Two other SGTC representatives and SkillsUSA advisors, Dr. Michele Seay (National Education Team/Local Advisor) and Cynthia Carter (Director of Career Services/Student Organizations), earned the prestigious award. The Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI) was held from Sept. 23 - 27, 2017. The Award was presented to students and advisers who attend and actively participate in WLTI functions and sessions, demonstrate leadership action and complete pre-conference assignments, learn the SkillsUSA and civic awareness knowledge information, complete essays, and complete a five-minute, one-on-one personal interview with a National SkillsUSA board member. WLTI students and advisors had the special privilege of witnessing a wreath-laying ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial, visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and witnessing the changing of the guard ceremony, visiting the Martin Luther King, Jr. monument and other monuments and memorials. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It is a national organization the serves high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations.
