South Georgia Technical College is updating and improving the traffic corridor in the center of the Americus campus. Due to the construction, which will be underway now throughout Fall Semester, traffic patterns have been altered and additional parking areas identified.
“We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause students and the public during the construction phase,” said South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford. “The new updated and improved central traffic corridor will have a tremendous impact on the safety and the aesthetics of this campus. The area that is under construction is over 70 years old and still has the original tie downs for airplanes when this campus was used as an Army Air Corp training base during World War II. The concrete has cracked in areas and is beginning to be unsafe. The new plan will be much more pedestrian and traffic friendly.”
The construction project began in late July and is scheduled to be completed in January 2020. During the six-month project, the center of the campus from the front of the gymnasium all along the area in front of the Griffin building, the Energy and Transportation center and the Heavy Equipment Dealer’s Service Technology building will be closed to automobile and foot traffic. Students will enter and exit through the rear of the buildings. The construction zone will also block the regular parking areas for Martin Hall, the Haynes building as well as the cafeteria.
Individuals can enter the Americus campus at the Lindbergh Avenue entrance by the Pope Center, or Success Ave between the Odom Center and Hicks Hall and travel to the gymnasium. Transportation Drive is open to allow trucks to enter the Commercial Truck Driving area and the Energy and Transportation Center but traffic in front of the maintenance building and Morgan building has been closed off. Individuals can use Opportunity Avenue to gain entrance to McLain Hall, the cafeteria, and the Heavy Equipment Dealer’s Service Technology building.
On-campus housing residents in Martin Hall as well as students attending classes in the Morgan Diesel and Automotive Transportation Center, the Griffin building, the Heavy Equipment Dealer’s Service Technology (CAT) building as well as faculty and staff in Haynes, Hicks Hall and the Odom Center will be asked to park in the gymnasium and James Hall area as well as the Odom and Pope Center areas or in the area behind the buildings. No traffic will be allowed in the construction area.
“We have several events planned on our campus during Fall Semester and we ask that students, faculty, staff, and the public be patient as we update and improve our facilities,” added Dr. Watford.
