The South Georgia Technical College Jets soared to a 96 – 62 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) victory over Georgia Highlands and former SGTC assistant men’s basketball coach Reco Dawson Wednesday night. This win allowed the Jets to move into third place in the GCAA Division I standings with a 4 – 2 record. The Jets are 8 – 12 overall. Georgia Highlands fell to eighth place with a 1 – 4 record.
The Jets are on a four-game winning steak and despite a slow start, they came back strong after the first seven minutes of play and never relinquished the lead. They were up 51 – 30 at the end of the first half and then outscored the Chargers 45 – 32 in the second half to capture the 96 – 62 victory.
Sophomore guard Jalexs Ewing from Augusta led the Jets in scoring with 20 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Four other Jets scored in double-digits including sophomore center Matt Mbole who contributed 19 points and led the team in rebounds with 18 for a double-double night. He also had two blocked shots.
Freshman wing Guillaume Schoentgen came away with 15 points and he was followed by freshman guard Clark Mastin who had 14 points. Ilich Yacaman, a sophomore guard from Orlando, FL, closed out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Mark Ferdy came away with seven points, Frankie Raines added three points and then Reggie Cleveland, Jarius Davis, and Noa Istrefi closed out the scoring with two points each.
Georgia Highlands had two players in double figures. Landen Williams tossed in 13 points and Justen Goudelock came away with 11 points.
The Jets will play again at home Wednesday, February 4th at 7 p.m. when they host Gordon College. Gordon College is currently 3 – 4 and in sixth place in the GCAA Division I standings. They have defeated Andrew College, East Georgia and Southern Crescent Technical College.
The Lady Jets will be at home on Monday, February 2nd in a make-up game against Southern Crescent Technical College. That game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Jets will then travel to Central Georgia Technical College for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday in Macon. Both the Jets and Lady Jets will travel to Albany Tech on Monday, February 9th for a double-header and then to Central Georgia Tech on Wednesday for a double-header in Macon. Tip-off times for both double-headers are 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
