The South Georgia Technical College Crisp County Center recently hosted a Financial Literacy Workshop for students, faculty, and staff, featuring Michael Jenkins, Vice President and Branch Manager of Regions Bank. The workshop was designed to empower participants with essential financial knowledge and practical tools for managing personal finances.
During the engaging session, Jenkins walked attendees through foundational financial concepts, including budgeting, saving, credit management, and investing. He emphasized the importance of spending less than you earn, building an emergency fund, and maintaining a healthy credit score—critical habits for long-term financial well-being.
A major focus of the workshop was understanding how credit works. Jenkins discussed the significance of credit reports, the roles of the major bureaus—TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax—and how to monitor credit through alerts. He cautioned participants about the risks of lending money or co-signing loans and offered tips on managing credit card debt responsibly.
Jenkins also encouraged attendees to prioritize financial planning by “paying yourself first,” setting financial goals, and regularly reviewing their credit history.
