South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Career Services office recently conducted a comprehensive resume writing and career readiness workshop for students in the Electrical Lineworker program on the Americus campus.
The workshop, led by Career Services Director Cynthia Carter, was designed to help students prepare for successful job searches as they near completion of their program. Carter emphasized the importance of a well-crafted resume as a tool to secure interviews and stand out to top employers. Students received guidance on how to summarize their education, work experience, and qualifications effectively to leave a lasting impression on hiring managers.
In preparation for entering the workforce, eight students were randomly selected to participate in mock interviews. Carter guided them through the process using industry-specific questions while the rest of the class observed and learned from the interaction. “Interviewing is a process,” Carter said. “It doesn’t begin when you walk into the HR office—it starts with preparation.”
Adding an industry perspective, Industrial Electrical Systems instructor Patrick Owen joined the session to discuss key expectations and safety standards in the field. Owen covered real-world topics such as responding to workplace accidents, addressing conflict on the job, and setting career goals in the electrical industry. He also underscored the importance of never taking shortcuts—especially where safety is concerned.
Tammy Hamilton also contributed to the session by speaking with students about personal financial management. With many of the participants poised to begin new careers, she stressed the value of budgeting each pay period, prioritizing savings—including building an emergency fund—and taking full advantage of employer-provided benefits.
SGTC Career Services offers regular workshops to promote both career readiness and financial literacy. These sessions aim to empower students to make informed decisions, manage their finances responsibly, and transition into the workforce with confidence.
