SGTC Student Spotlight: Juan Alejo Balances Career, Family, and a Bright Future

Posted on

When Juan Alejo arrived in the United States from Monterrey, Mexico, at the age of 21, he brought with him an industrious spirit and a vision for a better future. That journey recently came full circle when he graduated from South Georgia Technical College with a diploma in Electrical Systems Technology.

Alejo’s path began in earnest in 2015 when he joined PRODMOD Manufacturing in Ellaville, Georgia, as an electrical helper. Over time, he rose through the ranks and has spent the last four years as an electrical supervisor, managing a team of 15 people. His sights are now set on an even bigger goal: “One day,” he said with a smile, “I want to be a plant manager.”

His love for electrical systems was clear in a recent conversation with SGTC Career Services Director Cynthia Carter, where he spoke with enthusiasm about the field. Often helping bridge communication with ESL students is Erika Carrillo, SGTC’s Human Resources Coordinator and a close family friend. Carrillo’s support has played a key role in Alejo’s SGTC experience, and their families share a strong bond through their shared faith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Americus.

A proud family man, Alejo balances work, school, and family with remarkable discipline. His son is currently a junior at Georgia Southwestern State University, while one daughter is a freshman at Columbus State University and his other daughter attends Furlow Charter School in Americus. Outside of his full-time job, he also takes on handyman work—bringing skills in roofing, carpentry, flooring, and air conditioning to the table.

Electrical Systems Technology instructor Patrick Owen praised Alejo’s performance and character, saying, “From day one, I’ve been impressed with Juan. He’s a great student, a role model, and he consistently demonstrates both knowledge and a willingness to help his classmates.”

With determination, humility, and a deep sense of purpose, Juan Alejo is building a future not just for himself, but for the next generation—one connection at a time.
