South Georgia Technical College’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Americus campus chapter recently celebrated PBL week in February. During PBL week, chapters are encouraged to publicize their activities, boost their membership, and gear up for spring events. To kick off PBL week the members took to social media to share their PBL Story on various social media platforms using hashtags. PBL members also gathered for a webinar hosted by the national PBL officer team. An Each One Reach One recruitment event was held in the Hicks Hall student center as part of PBL week and also PBL members honored local advisors Dr. Andrea Oates and Donna Lawrence with a gift in celebration of Advisory Appreciation Day. Mr. Xavier Jackson, SGTC Barbering Instructor and local business owner, served as the Career Awareness Day speaker with a presentation on Entrepreneurial Concepts. On Spirit Day, PBL members wore hand-crafted SGTC-inspired red and black ribbons at the District Conference held at Central Georgia Technical College in Macon. On the last day of PBL week, students spent time volunteering behind the scenes at Harvest of Hope for Community Service Day. Also earlier in the month, the Americus Campus Chapter of PBL and friends, including SGTC resident assistants, were selected to participate in a college student focus group. The focus group was an initiative of the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce in an effort to develop leadership programming for Emerging Leaders. The discussions explored the needs of college students and will inform program planning decisions. Three officers of the Americus Campus Chapter of PBL participated in the PBL Groundhog Job Shadow day on February 2nd. Racarda Blackmon of Americus, President; Ashley Halstead of Ellaville, 1st Vice-President; and Fierra Riley of Americus, Secretary, had the opportunity to observe mentors perform their job duties. Racarda chose to shadow a position in which an employee is coordinating and managing personal services tasks for clients. Ashley got a firsthand perspective on the operations of a college bookstore. Fierra decided to shadow an LPN Supervisor. For more information about PBL on the Americus campus, contact Dr. Andrea Oates at 229.931.2705 or aoates@southgatech.edu.
