Chad Brown of Ellaville has joined South Georgia Technical College as the full-time Machine Tool Technology instructor, announced South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford. He will report to South Georgia Technical College Academic Dean David Finley and SGTC Vice President of Academic Affairs David Kuipers.
Brown, who is a 2005 graduate of the South Georgia Technical College Machine Tool Technology program, has worked as a Machinist with the Marine Depot Maintenance Command on board Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany Georgia for 13 years. He also has a Bachelor of Business Administrator degree from Ashford University and attended Georgia Southwestern State University. He began working with Marine Depot Maintenance Command on board Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany Georgia as a Machinist helper in 2004 while he was attending South Georgia Technical College. After graduation he was promoted to machinist and served in that position for another year and a half before being promoted to CNC Machinist where he worked for the next eight years. Chad was promoted to Machine Shop Leader and served in that role until joining the SGTC team.
“We are pleased to have Chad Brown as our new Machine Tool Technology instructor,” said SGTC President Dr. John Watford. “We believe that he will be an asset to our college and that he has a great deal of knowledge and experience that will be beneficial to students who wish to pursue a career in machine tool technology.”
Machine Tool Technology is an exciting field where imagination is turned into reality. Almost every product used on a daily basis has gone through a machining process of one type or another. In SGTC Machine Tool Technology program, the students learn how to create the parts that make technology work. A machinist can take raw materials and produce a specialized finished product through knowledge that is a combination of theoretical information and hands-on experience. With practical experience in bench work, assembly layout, manual machining and computer numerical control (CNC) programming, a student will be prepared to handle a wide range of responsibilities in the metalworking industry. Machinists are in high demand and the employment outlook is expected to grow six percent in the next six years. The average salary for a Machinist is $43,160 per year.
Students who are interested in pursuing a Machine Tool Technology diploma can enroll in South Georgia Technical College’s eight-week Summer Semester beginning Thursday, June 1st, 2017. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and the General Assembly have included Machine Tool Technology in the Hope Career Grant program that provides up to an extra $500 per semester in tuition and fees for HOPE grant eligible students. This is for students who enroll in select majors specially aligned with one of the 12 industries in which there are more jobs available in Georgia than there are skills worked to fill them.
