Feng Jie of DeSoto, a South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Air Conditioning Technology student, has been named SGTC Student of Excellence for September during the college’s recent student recognition ceremony held in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on SGTC’s Americus campus.
Feng Jie received a plaque of recognition and a financial award from SGTC for his accomplishments. He was nominated for this honor by SGTC Air Conditioning Technology instructor Glynn Cobb.
“He’s a very dedicated student—always early to class, has an excellent work ethic, and is incredibly smart,” said Cobb of his nominee.
Feng Jie moved to Georgia eight years ago from China, and says he loves it here. “I’m still trying to get better at English,” he joked. “My instructor Mr. Cobb is so good at what he does. He works hard to make sure I understand exactly what he’s talking about in class.”
Each month, students from certain divisions selected for that month are nominated for the Student of Excellence award by their instructors. This month’s ceremony recognized students in technical and industrial programs at SGTC. The winner is selected based on a number of criteria, including grades, work ethics, participation in clubs and organizations, and amount of program completion. Each nominee is presented with a certificate and a South Georgia Technical College Student of Excellence T-shirt.
Other nominees included Kaleb Tyler York of Cordele, Drafting Technology; Alex Hill of Reynolds, Electronics Technology; Tyler Holt of Phenix City, Alabama, Electrical Systems Technology; Ben Adams of Leesburg, Industrial Systems Technology; Jorge Lara of Montezuma, Machine Tool Technology; and Wesley Brazier of Richland, Welding and Joining Technology.
Additional nominating instructors included Lora Wiseman, Drafting Technology; Mike Collins, Electronics Technology; Tyler Wells, Electrical Systems Technology; Phil Deese, Industrial Systems Technology; Gil Pittman, Machine Tool Technology; and Ted Eschmann, Welding and Joining Technology.
