SGTC Coaches speak at Americus Rotary Club
South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head basketball coach James Frey and Jets head basketball coach Travis Garrett spoke to members of the Americus Rotary Club recently. Americus Rotary Club member and SGTC Assistant to the President Don Smith introduced the coaches at the meeting.
The Americus Rotary Club has supported both the South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets each season through a donation to the Jets Booster Club. The club has also assisted both teams with financial assistance when they earned the right to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Basketball tournament in Kansas throughout the years.
This year the Lady Jets are ranked 24th in the NJCAA with a 19 – 3 overall record and they are currently in first place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference with an 8 – 0 record. The Jets are in third place behind two nationally ranked teams with a 4 - 3 GCAA performance.
The South Georgia Technical College coaches highlighted that the Jets and Lady Jets are students first and athletes second. They stressed grade point average requirements as well as the willingness of the student athletes to give back through community service projects as well as through their collegiate competition.
Accompanying the head coaches to the meeting were Lady Jets freshman forward Esther Adenike from Lago, Nigeria; freshman forward Houlfat Mahouchize from Nice, France; freshman guard Kanna Suzzuki from Hamamatsu, Japan; Jets sophomore guard Patrick Welch from Pembroke, New Hampshire and Jets freshman guard Jordan Bates from Orlando, FL.
