SGTC honor society sponsors Domestic Violence Awareness Month walk

South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) for the Americus campus recently sponsored a Domestic Violence Awareness Walk for the month of October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. NTHS officers and members, as well as other club and organization members and students on the Americus campus recently gathered to walk across campus to raise awareness for the struggles many face as victims of domestic violence, which is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior characterized by the intent to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner or family member. Many students wore purple to represent NTHS and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event was organized by NTHS advisor Raven Payne, and SGA advisor Dr. Michele Seay and SGTC Assistant to the President Don Smith both shared information about signs of domestic violence, how to seek help as a victim, and other domestic violence resources available. Statistically, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, and over 15 million children witness such violence in their homes every year. Domestic violence can take many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, economic, or psychological. It affects people of all ages, sexual orientations, religions, genders, socioeconomic backgrounds, and education levels, and takes place in all kinds of relationships. Most incidents are never reported to the police. For more information about domestic violence, visit joyfulheartfoundation.org/learn/domestic-violence. If you’re a South Georgia Tech student and you wish to become a member of the NTHS, contact Americus campus advisor Raven Payne at 229.931.2568 or rpayne@southgatech.edu to find out if you qualify. Crisp County Center students can contact the NTHS Advisor for that campus, Kari Bodrey, at 229.271.4051 or kbodrey@southgatech.edu.
