SGTC instructors and staff speak to Webster County students about career opportunities

Posted on
South Georgia Technical College instructors and staff members recently spoke with students at the Webster County High School College and Career Day about the Move On When Ready (MOWR) high school program, as well as SGTC program offerings. The instructors and staff members who spoke to Webster County students included: Vickie Austin, High School Coordinator; Brittny Wright and Beth Brooks, High School Initiatives Specialists; Andrea Ingram, Computer Information Systems/Networking Specialist Instructor; Teresa McCook, Criminal Justice Technology Instructor; Matthew Burks, John Deere/Agricultural Technology Instructor; Starlyn Sampson, Auto Collision Repair Technology Instructor; Chief Sammy Stone, Director of Campus Safety. Students were able to ask questions about SGTC’s associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs, and SGTC instructors told students about a variety of career opportunities they could take advantage of as a future SGTC graduate. Georgia’s Move On When Ready (MOWR) dual enrollment program allows qualified high school students to maximize their education and career training by taking courses that earn college and high school credit at the same time. Many local high school students take advantage of the opportunity at South Georgia Tech, which can save students and their parents thousands of dollars in college tuition. Some students receive their high school diploma at the same time as they receive an Associate’s Degree from South Georgia Tech. The state of Georgia has set aside funds to cover tuition and non-course related fees for all qualified students. Under the MOWR program and South Georgia Tech’s own free textbooks initiative, textbooks are supplied for MOWR students. Students may be required to pay for course-related supplies or fees, or for non-consumable items such as workbooks. Students in the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade who attend a participating Georgia high school or an approved home study program may be eligible for MOWR, and students must provide copies of their ACT or SAT scores or take a placement assessment.
