SGTC Medical Assisting students assist at Health Screening
Students in the South Georgia Technical College Medical Assisting program assisted the Sumter County Health Department in providing a health screening at TSG, Inc. in Americus recently.
“This was an excellent opportunity for our students to get some practical experience,” said South Georgia Technical College Medical Assisting Instructor Dianna Skipper. “I would like to thank the Sumter County Health Department and TSG, Inc. for allowing our students to participate in this health fair. We appreciate their partnership with the college and with our students.”

A medical assistant is often the first person that patients meet in a doctor’s office. They may make appointments, prepare patients for exams, and assist the doctor with exams. Some of their clinical duties include directly helping patients, gathering vital signs, giving medications, explaining or performing treatments and tests like EKG’s and phlebotomy. Medical Assistants also must have administrative skills such as managing the day to day business operations of a medical office, management of medical records, communicating with other healthcare agencies, accepting and making payments, coding insurance and processing claims.
