South Georgia Technical College will be hosting an “active shooter” training drill on its main campus in Americus on Friday, October 7th  beginning at 10 a.m.   Individuals from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Sumter County Fire and Rescue, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Americus Police Department, Macon County Emergency Management Association, Middle Flint Regional 911, Gold Star EMS, Sumter County Emergency Management Office, and other local law enforcement, safety, and first response organizations will participate in the exercise. SGTC Assistant to the President Don Smith and SGTC Campus Safety Director Sammy Stone and other SGTC officials have been working closely with individuals from these organizations in coordinating the drill. The event will be held during the college’s fall break when many students will not be present on campus. SGTC faculty and staff will be participating in the drill, which will also test the college’s emergency notification system. This will be the second drill of this nature on SGTC’s Americus campus. The first one was held in October of 2014, and the Crisp County Center campus in Cordele held its own successful drill in October of last year. SGTC officials and local agencies will meet following the drill to evaluate the training exercise.
