Two South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) basketball players have been spotlighted as the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Players of the Week for the 2023 – 2024 basketball season. Lady Jet Maeva Fosta was selected as the Women’s Player of the Week and Deonte Williams of the Jets was selected as the Men’s Player of the Week.
Deonte Williams, a 6’ 6” sophomore guard from Sydney, Australia, was selected as the Men’s GCAA Player of the Week, November 13. He averaged 17.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.6 steals in two games during the Jets Veterans Day Classic.
The Jets are 4 – 3 overall. They defeated Florida Southwestern State College, 61 – 56, and then lost to Coastal Alabama, 80 – 72, in the tournament the week Williams was spotlighted. Williams was one of four sophomores who returned to play this season with the Jets.
Last season, Williams was injured and only played in seven games for the Jets. He averaged 9.1 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. This season, Williams has started all six games for the Jets and is averaging 16.7 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.5 steals.
The other South Georgia Technical College basketball player spotlighted was Lady Jets center Maeva Fotsa. The 6’ 2” sophomore from Quebec, Canada, was recognized as the Women’s Player of the Week for November 20th. She averaged 21.5 points and 15 rebounds in back-to-back wins for the Lady Jets.
The Lady Jets are currently in first place in the GCAA with a 3 – 1 overall record. Fosta returned to the Jets for her sophomore season. She played in 13 games for the Lady Jets in 2022 – 2023 when the Lady Jets advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament and finished 8th in the nation.
Fotsa averaged 3.5 points and 4.1 rebounds as a freshman. This season, she has started all four games for the Lady Jets and is averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds per game.
The Lady Jets will be hosting the Pete Arrington Thanksgiving Classic on November 24 -25. Six teams are participating including Georgia Highlands, Miami Dade, Andrew College, Tallahassee Community College and Chipola.
The action will begin at 2 p.m., Friday, November 24. Georgia Highlands will open against Miami Dade, Andrew College will face Tallahassee Community College at 4 p.m. and the Lady Jets will match-up against Chipola at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, Andrew College and Chipola will play at 1 p.m. followed by Georgia Highlands and Tallahassee at 3 p.m. and the Lady Jets and Miami Dade Community College will wrap up the action at 5 p.m.
The Jets will be in action at home tonight, Tuesday, November 21, at 7:30 p.m. against New Rock Prep at 7:30 and then will play again at home on Thursday, November 30th at 7 p.m. against North Florida Prep.
