SGTC Concludes Series of STEM Days for Crisp County Fifth Graders

Posted on

South Georgia Technical College recently hosted the final sessions of a series of STEM Days at the SGTC Crisp County Center, welcoming additional groups of fifth-grade students from Crisp County Schools for hands-on learning experiences. The events, held in partnership with Chattahoochee-Flint RESA, provided students with an engaging introduction to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts while showcasing a variety of career pathways available through technical education.

Throughout the visits, students rotated through interactive stations led by SGTC faculty and students. In the culinary lab, students worked with Culinary Arts instructor Johnny Davis to prepare chocolate chip cookies, learning basic measurement and teamwork skills. Other activities included creating beaded bracelets and assembling simple circuit boards, giving students a fun and accessible introduction to design and basic electrical concepts.

Students also explored technology and automation as Automation instructor David Price and his students demonstrated a robotic arm and discussed the role of coding in modern industries. In addition, students received hands-on instruction in basic CPR techniques from Medical Assisting and nursing faculty and students, including instructors Carol Cowan, Chad Morgan, Chad Mays, and Brittany Bertelson.

Faculty members Teresa Jolly, Nicole Turner, Jeff Sheppard, and Tom Mayo also spoke with students about their respective program areas, providing insight into potential career paths. SGTC President Dr. John Watford stopped by during one of the sessions to greet students and encourage them to explore future educational opportunities.

These events marked the conclusion of several STEM Day visits hosted this semester, each designed to spark curiosity and introduce young learners to technical education through fun, interactive experiences. South Georgia Technical College continues to partner with local schools and Chattahoochee-Flint RESA to inspire the next generation of students and help them envision future careers.

South Georgia Technical College offers over 200 programs including many in STEM fields. Learn more and apply for admission to SGTC at www.southgatech.edu.
