The advisory committee for South Georgia Technical College’s Horticulture program met recently on the Americus campus to discuss the program’s progress and developments in the horticulture industry. Instructor Brandon Gross led the meeting and gave updates on enrollment, curriculum development, student involvement in the community, and other program highlights.

Advisory committee members offered valuable insight on emerging instructional methods, technology updates, and employment and internship opportunities for Horticulture students. The group also discussed realistic salary expectations for graduates entering the workforce.

Those attending the meeting included Ben Pope, agriculture instructor, Sumter County High School; Eric Sellers, agriculture instructor Schley County High School; Gia Wagner, Superintendent, Andersonville National Historic Site; Adam Foldesi, Arborist, National Park Service; Dr. Mark Latimore, Extension Administrator and Director of Land Grant Affair, Fort Valley State University; T. Brinson Brock Sr., Sumter County Middle School; and Chelsea Odom, University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Sumter County ANR Agent. SGTC Academic Dean Brett Murray and Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Grants Coordinator Katrice Martin also participated.

Advisory committees such as this one serve as an essential bridge between the classroom and the workplace, helping instructors stay current on industry trends and better prepare students for successful careers after graduation.
