“Breast Cancer Awareness is near and dear to my heart,” said South Georgia Technical College Alumna and Breast Cancer Survivor Tara Arnold Bivins when she shared her story of fighting and survival recently with faculty, staff, and students at South Georgia Technical College prior to the college’s Breast Cancer Awareness Walk around the Americus campus.
She shared that she is one of six children. Three were diagnosed with breast cancer and her brother tragically passed away from the disease. She mentioned that to encourage men to go for checkups as well.
Shown above are some of the SGTC faculty, staff, and students who turned out for the SGTC Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on the SGTC campus recently.
The SGTC practical nursing graduate thanked everyone for their support during her journey and she encouraged others to take advantage of programs that would allow individuals to be checked for breast cancer. SGTC Criminal Justice Instructor Teresa McCook introduced her friend and neighbor as the guest speaker and she was supported by her former instructors Jennifer Childs and Christine Rundle.
The SGTC Student Affairs department sponsored the Breast Cancer Awareness event in Americus and over 100 faculty, staff, and students participated. The Student Affairs group also held an event at the Crisp County Center to celebrate and honor those who have or have had breast cancer. SGTC had a window of fame for individuals to recognize loved ones and friends who have suffered and died from cancer or who have overcome the disease.
Following the brief talk by Tara Arnold Bivins on the Americus campus, the faculty, staff, and students participated in the brief memory/honor walk and returned to the Odom Center for a time of light snacks, refreshments and celebration. SGTC faculty, staff, and students were encouraged to wear pink to show support for breast cancer awareness.
