The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Foundation presented the South Georgia Technical College Foundation with a donation recently to help fund the TCSG Foundation Gretchen K. Corbin Last Mile Scholarships to SGTC students who are nearing the completion of their program of study and do not have enough funds to complete.

SGTC Foundation Chair Bill Harris accepted the gift from TCSG Foundation Executive Director Cory Thompson.  The scholarships will be up to $500 and will be available to assist with tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses not already covered through financial aid.

“On behalf of the South Georgia Technical College Foundation, we appreciate the support of the Technical College System of Georgia Foundation in assisting students at South Georgia Technical College,” said SGTC Foundation Chair Bill Harris.

“These funds are crucial to helping students gain the skills needed to join the workforce and become contributing members of our communities,” said SGTC President Dr. John Watford.  “This is a tremendous opportunity for students who are experience or need help to overcome financial burdens that may otherwise prevent them from graduating.”

South Georgia Technical College Vice President of Institutional Advancement and SGTC Foundation Executive Director Su Ann Bird echoed Dr. Watford’s and Bill Harris’ comments.  “There are times when a $500 scholarship or grant can make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students,” said Bird.

“By providing students with this type of financial lifeline for education, we have seen individuals complete their programs, find employment in their chosen fields and become valuable members of this area’s workforce as nurses, commercial truck drivers, electrical lineworkers, welders, childcare providers, computer information system operators, automotive mechanics and more.  This is creating opportunities for students as well as employers,” added Bird.

For information about assisting academically deserving and financially disadvantaged SGTC students through grants or scholarships, contact SGTC Foundation Executive Director Su Ann Bird at sbird@southgatech.edu or 229-931-2248.  Contributions can also be mailed to the SGTC Foundation at P.O.
