A’Neya Mack of Plains was recognized recently as the overall Student of Excellence for South Georgia Technical College in Americus. Mack is a Computer Information Systems student and was nominated by SGTC CIS instructor Veronda Cladd.
Cladd praised Mack for her remarkable growth over the past year—from a quiet, reserved student to an emerging leader on campus. Mack now serves as secretary of the Student Government Association and has excelled in SkillsUSA competitions, winning a gold medal at the state level and advancing to nationals.
“Over the past year, I have seen A’Neya come out of her cocoon,” said Cladd. “I’m so proud of her, and I know she will spread her wings and fly high.”
Mack was visibly stunned when her name was announced by the Vice President of Academic Affairs as the overall winner. “Wow, I didn’t think I was going to win, but thank you for this honor,” she said.
She also expressed gratitude to Cladd for her guidance and encouragement. “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for her and all the other instructors,” said Mack. “I used to be quiet and shy, but she helped me get involved in student government and SkillsUSA. I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m going to keep prospering and succeeding.”
Other students nominated for the award were: Angela Rivers of Richland, Accounting, nominated by Brenda Boone; Maurice Williams of Americus, Business Technology, nominated by Sharon Smith; Haley Story of Leesburg, Marketing Management, nominated by Mary Cross; and Dwight Brown of Conyers, Sports and Recreation Management, nominated by Chris Ballauer.
Each month, students from certain divisions selected for that month are nominated for the Student of Excellence award by their instructors. The Student of Excellence is chosen based on a number of criteria, including grades, work ethics, participation in clubs and organizations, and amount of program completion.
As the winner, Mack was awarded with a plaque of recognition, a personal letter of recommendation from SGTC President Dr. John Watford and a $50 check for her accomplishments. Additionally, her name will be displayed on SGTC’s digital marquee as well as inscribed on a plaque in Hicks Hall among previous Student of Excellence winners. Each nominee was awarded with a nomination certificate and an exclusive student of excellence t-shirt.
South Georgia Technical College offers over 200 diplomas, degrees, and technical certificates of credit in a variety of programs plus many opportunities to get involved in campus life beyond the classroom.
