South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Electrical Systems Technology student Kelsey Bridges has been selected for a competitive four-month internship with International Paper at the Flint River Mill in Oglethorpe, Georgia. Bridges will train as an Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Technician in the Utilities Unit, rotating bi-weekly through other units for additional hands-on experience.
Bridges credited SGTC Electrical Systems instructor Patrick Owen and Career Services Director Cynthia Carter for their roles in helping him secure the opportunity.
“Mr. Owen encouraged us to attend a classroom presentation to learn more about employment at International Paper,” said Bridges. “I accepted the offer, applied, and my resume was immediately reviewed. Ms. Carter even conducted a mock interview with me on the spot. I’m very grateful to both of them.”
Before enrolling at SGTC, Bridges spent three years as a forklift operator with Capstone Logistics in Savannah and one year at Perdue Farms, Inc. Seeking more than just a job, he decided to return to school to pursue a more rewarding and sustainable career.
“I realized SGTC could lead me to a career, not just another job,” he said. “This internship is a step toward continuous learning and growth, and I feel confident I’m on the right path.”
Bridges encouraged others to explore the opportunities available at SGTC, adding, “Friends, SGTC awaits your arrival. Apply now!”
