SGTC inducts nine students into National Technical Honor Society

South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) recently inducted nine new members into the college’s chapter of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) in recognition of the students’ outstanding academic achievement and spotlighted two additional students for their second year of service in the organization. The ceremony was held in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus campus.

SGTC President Dr. John Watford welcomed those in attendance and congratulated the students on their accomplishment. “You are representing the best of South Georgia Technical College and excelling in what you do,” Watford said to the inductees. “Be proud of what you’ve achieved. And be sure to add this to your resume. Employers recognize the value of NTHS.”

After the welcome from Dr. Watford, Biology instructor and NHTS Advisor Matthew Cowen shared a statement of the purposes of the NTHS: to reward excellence in workforce education; to encourage students to reach a higher level of achievement; to promote honesty, responsibility, teamwork, leadership and citizenship; to help build and maintain partnerships with local business and industry; and to foster a more positive image for workforce education in America.

Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs and NTHS Advisor Josh Curtin then presented the meaning of the NTHS Colors. Silver represents value, reward, and worth; white represents truth, honesty; and purple represents achievement and honor. NTHS Advisor Matthew Cowan also explained the symbolism of the NTHS shield and invited students to help light candles to represent responsibility, scholarship, skill, honesty, citizenship, leadership, and service, the seven attributes all members of the NTHS share in common.

Then NTHS second-year students, Gregory David Hester of Cuthbert, Motorsports; and Katelyn Thorpe of Americus, Early Childhood Care and Education; were presented with NTHS pins for their second-year of achievement.

All of the NTHS members recited the NTHS motto and the first-year students received personalized certificates commemorating their induction into the National Technical Honor Society.

The students inducted included: Lamikia Greene of Elko, Criminal Justice; Emma Foley, Kimberly, AL; Electric Power Generation – CAT; Evan Mobley of Buena Vista, Electrical Systems; Kendall Phillips of Ellaville, Technical Studies; Karina Santos-Pagan of Americus, Early Childcare and Education; Brittany Sims of Americus, LPN to RN Bridge program; Keyara Williams of Smithville, Early Childcare and Education; Cameron Wilson of Snellville, Electronics; and Justin Wilson of Americus, Marketing.

The NTHS Officers for the next year were installed and given the oath of office. Gregory David Hester will serve as President; Kendall Phillips, Vice-President, Keyara Williams, Secretary, and Karina Santos-Pagan, Treasurer.

The National Technical Honor Society honors the achievements of students within workforce education, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today’s highly competitive workforce.
