SGTC Jets Jalexs Ewing named GCAA Player of Week

South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) sophomore guard Jalexs Ewing was selected as the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division 1 men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of November 10th. This is only the second week of the Player of Week selections and he is the first SGTC player to be chosen for this honor from the men’s or women’s program.

Ewing, a 6’2” guard from Augusta, GA is currently the leading scorer for the Jets with 72 points. He was selected for this honor after he averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in two games for the Jets last week.

As a freshman, Ewing started 15 of the Jets 16 conference games and hit 48.1 percent of his field goals, 44% of his three-point attempts and 57.6 of his free throws. He was the Jets leading scorer in conference play with 227 points.

This season, Ewing has started four of the team’s five games. He is averaging 46.2% from the field, but is only 2 of 9 or hitting 22.2% of his three-point attempts. He has hit 22 – 42 free throws for a 52.4% average. He also has 28 rebounds, nine assists and one steal. He is tied with Marc Ferdy as the second leading rebounder for the Jets. Matt Mbole is leading the team in rebounding with 54.

The Jets are currently 1 – 4 on the season with an impressive win over nationally ranked Chipola College. However, they dropped the next four with losses to Tallahassee College twice, East Mississippi Community College and Northeast Mississippi.

The Jets will travel to Melbourne, FL on Friday, November 14th to take on Indian River State College in the Eastern Florida Classic at 6 p.m. They will face Eastern Florida State College on Saturday, November 15 at 2 p.m.

The Jets will return home for a rematch with Chipola College on Wednesday, November 19 at 7 p.m. in the James S. Peters gymnasium and then will host the Sparky Reeves Classic tournament on November 21 and 22.

The Sparky Reeves Classic kicks off with Eastern Florida facing East Georgia State at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 21st followed by the SGTC Jets hosting Northeast Mississippi at 8 p.m. On Saturday, November 22, East Georgia State will play Northeast Mississippi at 1 p.m. and the Jets will take on Eastern Florida at 3 p.m.
